Early defibrillation - take it on board!
Out at sea, if the skipper or one of your passengers suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), how prepared would you be?
The probability of professional help being able to reach you within 2-3 minutes is very remote, yet prompt defibrillation is crucial to save the life of an SCA victim Without defibrillation, their chance of survival decreases by 10 per cent per minute

Laerdal's Marketing Communications Manager, Mel Matthews, explains, "Sudden cardiac arrest can happen at any time, without warning".
"In most cases, the heart goes into fibrillation, which means that instead of beating, it quivers".
"A defibrillator shocks the heart back into a regular beating pattern".
"If defibrillation is administered within one minute of collapse, it can improve the patient's chance of survival by around 80 per cent." The HeartStart Marine Defibrillator is very easy to use - when the pads attached to the defibrillator are placed on the patient's chest, the machine automatically assesses the heart's rhythm.
If the heart is in fibrillation, simple, audible instructions prompt the user to press a button that delivers a shock to the patient via the pads.
The defibrillator continues to assess the heart's rhythm and will advise further shocks if necessary until professional help arrives.
Mel continues, "Currently in the UK, only 5% of sudden cardiac arrest victims survive to hospital".
"If more people were aware of the importance of early defibrillation and defibrillators were more accessible, the number of sudden cardiac deaths would be greatly reduced".
"The Heartstart Marine Defibrilator is compact and light and can be easily stored alongside onboard first aid kits or fire extinguishers for instant access in an emergency".
In response to comments and feedback from boat owners, Laerdal has addressed all the issues that have previously made the ownership of an onboard defibrillator unrealistic.
Laerdal's HeartStart Marine Defibrillator is 100% reliable, safe, robust, affordable and easy to use.
The HeartStart Marine Defibrillator can distinguish between a "moving platform" and heart movement, and even stand taste of English weather, making it a feasible and realistic option for all sea-faring vessels.
A short course in first aid and defibrillator use is all that is necessary to enable an operator to save someone's life with a defibrillator.
The RYA first aid course is the ideal type of training to prepare skippers and crews.
