Luxottica, an eyewear provider, has chosen Leuze Electronic's radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracking system for its production facility.

Within such a complex operation, Luxottica worked with Leuze to develop a complete system for the collection of production tracking data on specific sunglasses production lines, giving increased traceability to these processes.

During a production process, there is always an opportunity for error, whether from a machine failure or a human error.

The cost and impact of any such error can be reduced if it is picked up and contained early, such as before a larger production batch is produced or before extra manufacturing activities are undertaken.

As a result, Luxottica wanted to supplement its quality assurance stages by introducing a way of tracking production.

It wanted to select a single type of tracking system in order to avoid the complexity of having differing formats within a mixed system.

RFID is said to be a cost-effective solution for tracking both tote bins and the workforce to ensure that correct bins and parts are on the correct production line and that production staff are working in the correct areas.

The tote bins have RFID tags placed on them to provide traceability throughout the plant and the production staff members wear RFID tag badges.

This enables every stage of production to be tracked, from the raw material entering the factory through to the finished product being packaged.

If a quality issue is found, using the data in the RFID system, batches can be checked, helping to ensure that the finished articles remain of the highest standard.

If an error is identified, the RFID system provides the ability to track back to the exact tote bin that was used and also the member of the production team involved in the process.

This improves the containment and correction actions that can be taken to reduce the impact and risk of the error happening again.
