LGC's Chief Executive, Dr Richard Worswick, won the title of Ernst and Young's 2003 UK Business Products and Services Entrepreneur of the Year at an award ceremony at Le Meridien Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Monday 6 October Entrepreneur of the Year is a prestigious, regional, national and international annual award programme, which identifies and recognises the achievements of outstanding entrepreneurs within successful growing, dynamic businesses

Dr Worswick was named the London regional finalist in the Business Products and Services category in June and this week he beat stiff competition from the other five regional finalists in the category to win the national title.

Accepting his award, Dr Worswick thanked his colleagues who had "helped to transform a former government agency into a leading science-based service company".

Seven years ago LGC was an independent agency of the Department of Trade and Industry - today it is Europe's leading independent analytical laboratory with a turnover of 52m GBP.

One of the company's fastest-growing areas of work is DNA-based diagnostic services, which includes forensic investigations for police forces.

Thanking the judges and sponsors for the award, Dr Worswick added special thanks to his wife and to all the staff at LGC, particularly Dr Ray Ah-Sun, LGC's Director of Business Development who, he noted, "has been such fun to work with".

The other categories were: Technology and Communication; Social Entrepreneur; Emerging Entrepreneur; Young Entrepreneur; Consumer Products; Consumer Services and Master Entrepreneur.
