New LGC laboratories in Runcorn will enable the company to meet the growing demand for DNA forensic services throughout the UK and will also enable them to offer faster turn round times.

LGC expands its forensic DNA services in the North West LGC, Europe's leading independent analytical laboratory providing chemical, biochemical and forensic analysis, celebrated the official opening of its new forensic DNA facilities at The Heath in Runcorn, Cheshire on 9 December 2003

Baroness James of Holland Park (P.D.James), the well-known crime writer, was guest of honour at the event and performed the official opening of the new facilities.

Speaking to invited guests and customers from police forces throughout the UK, as well as representatives from the National DNA Database, the Forensic Science Service and local government and the business community, P.DJames highlighted the importance of developments in forensic science, especially powerful DNA techniques, to crime writing.

P.D.James said: "DNA has revolutionised the police investigation of crime and, indeed, the crime novel.

I am delighted to be opening LGC's state-of-the-art laboratories.

Who knows - I might pick up an idea or two for my writing!" The new DNA facilities at Runcorn comprise two new DNA laboratories: one for analysing criminal justice samples and one for analysing samples taken from the scene of a crime.

Crime scene DNA analysis is a new service on offer at Runcorn.

Dr Richard Worswick, LGC Chief Executive, said: "LGC is a significant player in the forensic services sector: Our new laboratories in Runcorn will enable us to meet the growing demand for DNA forensic services throughout the UK and will also enable us to offer faster turn round times for our police force customers in the North West, helping them to solve crimes faster." Commenting on what the growth of LGC's forensic operations in Runcorn means for the local community, he added: "We look forward to being able to employ and train many more people as we continue to build our presence here in the North West." Nick Claxton, Head of LGC's Forensics Division, said: "Our continued success in winning forensic work has encouraged us to increase the range of forensic services that we offer and to expand our forensic facilities, both in Runcorn and in Teddington, Middlesex.

The expansion of LGC's DNA forensic operations reflects the increasing importance of DNA analysis in the crime-solving process.

Samples containing stains of blood, semen or saliva, as well as flakes of skin, hairs, cigarette ends or clothing are analysed and LGC uses its expertise to produce DNA profiles for each sample." LGC offers a range of forensic services from its laboratories in Teddington and Runcorn, including: criminal justice and crime scene DNA work; computer forensics; telecommunication equipment forensics; document examination; drug analysis and toxicology analysis.

LGC customers are police forces, other law enforcement bodies and solicitors for the defence throughout the UK.
