Alliance Raises Standard For DMPK Screening

A LGC product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Dec 18, 2003

LGC and Pharmidex have formed a strategic alliance that raises the standard for DMPK (Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics) screening services.

LGC, Europe's leading independent analytical laboratory providing advanced chemical, biochemical and forensic analysis, and Pharmidex, the London-based neuroscience research service provider, have formed a strategic alliance that raises the standard for DMPK (Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics) screening services to drug discovery companies.

Factors related to DMPK - the science of how molecules are broken down by the body and how long they stay in the bloodstream - are the major contributors to compound attrition.

For this reason a reliable DMPK profile of compounds early in the drug discovery cycle is essential - it has the potential to save time, eliminate waste and thus add value to the drug discovery process.

By bringing together the world class bioanalytical capabilities of LGC with the pharmacology and drug discovery expertise of Pharmidex, the alliance will deliver a breadth and depth of DMPK service which will be hard to match.

The partnership provides drug discovery companies with a very comprehensive offering - in silico, in vitro and beyond -across the whole drug discovery value chain, and is backed by a level of knowledge that is not commonly available in service companies.

Dr Derek Craston, Director of LGC's Pharmaceutical Services, said: "The founders of Pharmidex are acknowledged world experts in their fields.

Dr Mohammad Alavijeh, for example, is one of a handful of scientists in the world who not only has great experience in highly advanced DMPK techniques, but who is also at the cutting-edge of NeuroPK? - which assesses the ability of compounds to enter the Central Nervous System.

Combine that with LGC's large pool of skilled bioanalytical scientists, cutting-edge technologies and impeccable track record in analysis and interpretation, and we create an unbeatable offer to the drug discovery community." Dr Alan Palmer, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pharmidex, said: "By bringing our knowledge of the whole drug discovery process to the alliance, Pharmidex and LGC can now offer high level problem solving in addition to a top screening service.

We have met companies that offer analytical services, but none come close to touching the quality of LGC; so it will not only be exciting but also a privilege to be working closely with their teams in the future." Dr Mohammad Alavijeh, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Pharmidex, adds: "Not only will our DMPK screening service be world class, but we will go one step further than any other service company today.

By employing our NeuroPK? expertise, we will be able to tell companies if their compounds are crossing the blood-brain barrier.

This is essential, not only for compounds targeting CNS disorders, but for also indicating a potential liability of non-CNS drugs to cause side effects.

Currently no other company in the world offers this service.".
