The reference materials are catalogued according to the type of physical property being measured which, in most cases, is related to the type of energy involved, such as heat, light, sound and electrical.
For example, there are standards for optical properties such as the absorbance or transmittance of light, both for calibrating spectrometers.
Other categories include thermal standards for melting point or flash point, properties of particles such as surface area, shape and size, and amperometric and potentiometric standards for pH, redox, ion activity and conductivity.
