Materials testers facilitate plywood CE marking

A Lloyd Instruments product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Oct 14, 2005

A number of leading plywood manufacturers in Malaysia have purchased material testing equipment to allow bending elasticity and bonding strength to be evaluated.

With CE Marking for wood-based panels for construction purposes becoming mandatory in Europe on April 1 2004, it was essential for Malaysia's plywood industry to satisfy the necessary requirements.

A number of leading plywood manufacturers in the country have purchased material testing equipment from Lloyd Instruments to allow bending elasticity and bonding strength to be evaluated to the required standards.

Lloyd Instruments' local distributor, Lenny Chiew of Lenniko MTM Systems and Services, said: "A key factor in achieving CE marking is being able to determine the bond quality of veneer plywood by shear testing according to BS EN 314 and determining the modulus of elasticity and bending strength according to BS EN 310".

"Not only were we able to supply a special jig for the testing, but also the Lloyd Instruments' NEXYGEN MT materials test and data analysis software and Ondio application builder software ensured that the test could be automated and results presented in the graphical form required by the CE Marking auditor, BM TRADA." Most of the testing instruments sold were the Lloyd Instruments EZ20 advanced twin column universal testing system.

The EZ20 is designed for testing applications up to 20 kN (4496 lbf) in tension and direct compression.

It features a high resolution encoder for sample extension measurement and high accuracy speed control.

The EZ 20 is equipped with a special jig for the bending tests, which features a roller bearing rather than a fixed support.

The Ondio application builder allowed a routine to be set up to perform the tests automatically and to provide a test report containing graphs of the modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) against load, with markers at 10% and 40% of the maximum load.

The system also has a high sample throughput.

Bending tests are completed in one minute while bonding tests take just 30s.

This allows around 100 samples to be tested each day.
