Measurement of the melt flow rate of a polymer
The Davenport MFI-10 melt flow indexer from Lloyd Instruments is an intelligent modular system which allows fully automatic measurement of the melt flow rate of a polymer.
The Davenport MFI-10 melt flow indexer from Lloyd Instruments is an intelligent modular system which allows fully automatic measurement of the melt flow rate of a polymer.
Used as a stand-alone unit, or under computer control with the company's Nexygen-Davenport control and analysis software, the MFI-10 can be used both by resin manufacturers and processors such as extruders and injection moulders to measure the melt flow rate and melt volume rate of thermoplastics before use in the manufacturing process.
Measurements are made to international standards ISO1133 or ASTM D 1238 Method A (manual) and B (automatic).
The MFI-10 offers several optional features including an auto-flow rate timer, auto weight loaders and auto cut-off to improve accuracy and increase automation of the test.
Independent tests have shown that the MFI-10 gives results with less than 1% variance for standard polymers having melt flow index in the range 2 - 20 g/10 mins.
The MFI-10 features a dual test mode, which allows the melt density of the particular material under test to be calculated rather than relying on published data for generic materials.
An accurate value for this (at the test temperature) is required for use in ASTM Method B.
The addition of PC control and Nexygen -Davenport software brings further ease of use, producing test graphs, results tables and batch statistics.
Nexygen software also features a "bubble eliminator" where test results distorted due to the presence of air bubbles in the molten plastic are identified immediately, giving the user the opportunity to abort the test or to continue, thus giving a much higher sample throughput.
In addition, if too much polymer material is placed in the instrument barrel, the software recognises this and waits until the correct amount of sample is present before making a measurement.
In this way a measurement is made at the right time, every time, minimising sources of variability.
Nexygen-Davenport software also enables two MFI instruments or one MFI and one universal testing machine to be linked through a single computer for seamless simultaneous operation.
Linking an MFI instrument and a materials testing instrument through the vast data storage and networking facilities of the Nexygen software creates a fully integrated materials testing operation and brings new levels of efficiency transparency to testing environments.
This means that confirmatory tests can be run in parallel, reducing the wait time for results.
