Software accelerates critical NVH
development

LMS Test.Lab and the compact LMS SCADAS front-end, allow Eaton engineers to run diverse qualification and troubleshooting tests at customers in support of hydraulic system integration activities.

LMS, the engineering innovation company, announced that Eaton Corporation selected LMS Test.Lab to optimize the NVH performance of hydraulic systems and components Eaton engineers use LMS Test.Lab to reduce the radiated noise of hydraulic equipment, which is subjected to strict noise legislation, and to shape the sound quality of new product designs

Overall, the broad application reach of LMS Test.Lab, its user-friendly application workbooks and strong analysis capabilities translated into faster operational test execution and higher product quality.

In addition, LMS Test.Lab and the compact LMS SCADAS front-end, allow Eaton engineers to run diverse qualification and troubleshooting tests at customers in support of hydraulic system integration activities.

The Hydraulics Division of Eaton Corporation is widely recognized for its comprehensive line of fluid power products, which manage the operation of all kinds of equipment, including road recyclers, skid steer loaders, excavators, drilling machines, and material handling machines.

As combustion engines are becoming quieter, the sound of hydraulics and other auxiliary equipment becomes more apparent and dominant.

Reducing noise levels represents a complicated engineering challenge because air-borne hydraulics noise originates from the complex interaction between fluid transportation, internal component dynamics and housing vibrations.

To more effectively tackle this development challenge, Eaton recently standardized its noise and vibration engineering activities on LMS Test.Lab.

The software platform was selected for its advanced capabilities and integrated support of key NVH test applications, including rotating machinery testing, modal analysis, acoustic intensity and sound quality engineering.

"LMS Test.Lab covers the full scope of our diverse testing needs, from operational noise measurements on hydraulic driveline systems up to the analysis of the modal characteristics of a hydraulic pump assembly," stated Mike Beyer, engineering specialist - NVH at Eaton Hydraulics in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, USA.

"Our test engineers also value LMS Test.Lab's sequential workbook approach, which accelerates the execution of repetitive design verification measurements as well as more specific development-related test assignments.

Compared to previously installed test equipment, LMS Test.Lab reduces test throughput time in all process steps, while providing superior data monitoring and reporting capabilities." At Eaton, LMS Test.Lab also serves outside the test laboratory.

"With the LMS SCADAS 305 front-end and LMS Test.Lab running on a laptop PC, we are able to perform in-depth NVH tests on site for our customers," Beyer explained.

"Customers facing difficulty with hydraulic systems integration appreciate the opportunity to analyze test results together, retrieve the root cause on the spot, and further discuss countermeasures.

This level of cooperation emphasizes our role as a solution provider, as it intensifies customer interaction and increases customer confidence in Eaton products and services." Beyer concluded, "The flexibility of LMS Test.Lab enables us to execute any laboratory and field test assignment, and to realize significant productivity gains for both our regular and troubleshooting testing work.

In combination with our new process for low-noise design, established together with Eaton Innovation Center in Southfield, Michigan, we expect to cut down NVH development cost and time by 50%." * About Eaton - Eaton Corporation is a diversified industrial manufacturer with 2005 sales of US$11.1 billion.
