Wiper insert triples turning feedrates for SS, CI
The HPT Wiper Insert is claimed by LMT to increase turning feedrates threefold while improving surface finishes in annealed, hardened and tempered and stainless steels and CI.
The latest HPT Wiper coated inserts from LMT Boehlerit increase feedrates threefold, when compared with conventional carbide inserts when turning annealed, hardened and tempered and stainless steels.
Additionally, the HPT Wiper inserts improve surface finish, lower cutting forces and improve heat dissipation when cutting dry.
LMT (UK) of Coventry told manufacturingtalk that the inserts are ideal for turning annealed, hardened and tempered and stainless steels with a BHN up to 355 HB at speeds up to 480m/min.
They will also bring about improvements when turning grey, nodular graphite and malleable cast irons (CI) up to 260 HB at speeds of 500m/min.
The HPT Wiper insert fits a standard CNMG tool holder giving 0 deg cutting edge.
HPT Wiper inserts use a lower cutting force owing to the exact alignment of the special combination of radii and straight cutting edge in the direction of feed along the axis of the workpiece.
The HPT Wiper also provides a distinct advantage of improved surface finishing when turning very small diameters and the arrangement of the insert geometry also ensures there is no preliminary or post-cutting at the edge of the insert.
LMT's extremely hard, heat dissipating Drytec (A1203 ceramic-coated) yellow surfaces are applied to the carbide insert, prior to it being finish ground for added precision.
This ground area, each side of the insert, ensures excellent heat dissipation especially under dry cutting conditions enabling feed rates to be increased by up to a factor of three against conventional carbide inserts.
There are three basic grades of double cutting edge HPT Wiper.
1 - LC215K covering ISO range HC-P15.
2 - LC225C covering HC-P25.
3 - LC620H for HC-K15 applications.
* Turning annealed, low-alloy steel - an example of cutting annealed, low-alloy steel with a BHN of 180 HB using LC215K insert at 0.05mm/rev feed, a cutting speed when dry is recommended at 300m/min, which can be extended to 450m/min using coolant and a feed of 0.8mm/rev.
* Turning martensitic hardened and tempered stainless steel - using an LC225C insert on 240 HB martensitic hardened and tempered stainless steel with feed rates of 0.4mm/rev under dry conditions, 85m/min is recommended and with coolant, the cutting speed can be increased to 120m/min and the feed rate to 0.8mm/rev.
* Turning grey cast iron - when machining dry, on 180 HB grey cast iron, a cutting speed of 350m/min is recommended using HPT Wiper LC620H inserts with 0.05mm/rev feed rate.
However, this can be increased to 0.25mm/rev feed and 500m/min when using coolant.
