LMT Fette releases micro-milling cutters

LMT Fette is introducing a range of micro-milling cutters between 0.2mm and 3mm diameter.

The range of solid carbide, centre-cutting endmills are in two or four flutes, with or without corner radii and in ball nose style, suitable for side, slot and copy milling applications on a wide range of materials.

There is also a series of engraving endmills and coatings including cubic boron nitride (CBN) and diamond.

Developed using finite element analysis, the Fette Micro Cutters have a highly stable neck geometry that reduces the likelihood of breakage.

Optimised transition points in the design effectively halves the influence of cutting forces on the tool by shifting the weakest point to an area of lower impact.

Each tool has a strong core diameter giving higher levels of concentricity under cut with optimised length-to-diameter ratios and greater clamping security when held in contraction (heat shrink) chucks.

Tools are suitable for a wide range of materials including plastics, non-ferrous metals and difficult to machine materials up to 70 HRC.

In addition to standard tools, special geometries and applications can be developed with the customer.

There are a range of coatings including ALnano, a very thin nano-structured layer of TiAIN that allows the tool to resist abrasion while having a low friction coefficient to reduce cutting forces and temperature.

Also, the thin coating prevents formation of any built-up edge.

The latest ASX coating (TiSiN) is based on super nitrides for machining difficult materials up to 72 HRC with low wear due to the extremely hard, smooth, temperature-resisting nature of the coating.

Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is also available giving long tool life and is suitable for graphite, non-ferrous metals and aluminium alloys that contain silicon, copper-zinc alloys and fibre-reinforced plastics.

CBN coated tools are almost as hard as diamond and are suitable for steel up to 54 HRC.

Tools are available in extra short, short, long and extra long depending on the style and are able to run at speeds up to 50,000rev/min.
