A packaging technology that replaces the traditional practice of delivering materials to production line by Fork Lift Truck (FLT) and focuses on providing a safer working environment, has scooped a major award for Ford Motor Company and Linpac Materials Handling The jointly developed E-Frame Dolly System (EFDS), conceptualised by Ford and designed and delivered by Linpac, has won the coveted 'Manufacturing Logistics' category in the Institute of Logistics and Transport's Annual Awards for Excellence, presented by HRH The Princess Royal

The E-Frame was so named since when seen in plan view it resembles an upper case letter E.
Whilst in the E-frame the dollies are loaded with stock in the storage area and the system is then moved to the location where the stock is required.

A pedal mechanism releases the dolly from the E-Frame, so that it can be rolled out and exchanged with an empty load unit from the production line.
The EFDS has enabled Ford's Cologne Trim and Assembly plant where the company's new Fiesta and Fusion models are being made, to become the first such plant globally to operate without any FLT movements in the production area.
The electric trucks which move the EFDS have a much better safety record than their FLT predecessors, replacing FLT movements by 880 km per day (53%) and greatly contributing to improved pedestrian and in plant safety.
William Barratt, manager of Linpac Materials Handling's Automotive Business Unit commented: "This award recognises the major improvements to in plant safety brought about by the development and introduction of the EFDS and the major impact and improvements it offers.
"The end result is an excellent example of the way in which Linpac works with its customers to develop solutions which offer both ergonomic and safety improvements." Tony Riordan, supervisor of Ford's Material Handling division comments: "This initiative is a key contributor to creating a safe, working environment in which quality products can be manufactured in a more efficient manner.
We are delighted that this contribution is being recognised in such a prestigious and high profile way.
It applauds the team's efforts in developing a concept which has been engineered through to implementation in the state of the art Fiesta facility in Cologne.".
