Printers ensure whiskey pack traceability
Five automatic printers apply date and time codes to up to 3mm high either on the neck of whiskey bottles or behind the labels during pre-rinsing, as well as at labelling stations.
John Dewar and Sons is one of Scotland's leading whisky distillers and bottlers.
The company was founded by John Dewar and taken over by his sons, John and Tommy, in the early 1880s.
Today, the Glasgow based company exports its whisky across the world.
John Dewar and Sons produces around five million cases of whisky every year and in line with industry practice and legislation prints date and time codes onto its bottles during the production process.
Having first considered a competitor, the company decided to invest in five of Linx's CIJ 6000 series.
Impressed by the performance of these printers John Dewar and Sons has recently added a Linx 6800 to its production line.
Citing reliability as a key factor in the decision, Ian Collins, Quality Manager, commented: "Bottling is a high-speed environment requiring robust and reliable machinery at all stages of the production process".
"Our production line runs on average 16 hours a day, coding around 400 bottles per minute".
"With such an intense production schedule, ease of use and performance are key requirements"".
""We chose Linx printers because they were able to meet these needs".
The Linx 6800 printers apply date and time codes to up to 3mm high either on the neck of the bottle or behind the label during pre-rinsing, as well as at labelling stations.
The two lines of alphanumeric code allow traceability that is accurate within a minute of production time.
The design and technology of the Linx 6800 also makes individual pack traceability possible.
The codes are printed with Linx 3103 black mixed base ink, a semi-permanent visible ink, specifically formulated for high-speed applications requiring permanency, such as bottling.
Summarising the benefits of the Linx 6800 printers, Ian Collins concludes: "The 6800 printers have more than proven themselves in terms of reliability and ease of use and we are really pleased that individual pack traceability is now possible".
"More importantly, Linx has been excellent in terms of the service it has offered us.".
