Plastics plant awards majer storage contract

Locators Storage Systems has won the contract to install a complete storage system at Spaceage Plastics new facility on the basis of its ability to provide a turnkey solution.

Locators Storage Systems, a leading UK provider of storage solutions, has won the contract to install a complete storage system at Spaceage Plastics new facility on the Nuffield Industrial Estate in Poole.

A continuation of an existing relationship between the two companies, Locators was chosen for its ability to provide a turnkey solution that encompassed the supply of a new sideloader forklift truck together with the design and installation of mezzanine floors and a storage layout that could accommodate goods ranging from small components measuring just 10mm to long loads measuring up to 6m.

Spaceage Plastics, a leading manufacturer and distributor of plastic building products, has moved to a new facility on the Nuffield Industrial Estate in order to centralise its operation in one location.

Located on an adjacent site to another of the company's facilities, the newly acquired 12,000 sq.

ft.

site includes a 9,000 sq.

ft storage area.

In order to simplify picking Locators has primarily fitted out the storage area with a pigeonhole racking system but has also allocated an area under the main racking system for block stacking of some long loads.

A further racked area on the mezzanine floor has been fitted with melamine fronted custom-built bins to accommodate small components.

In accordance with building regulations and as a practical use of the system, Locators designed 2 main access routes to and from the top level of the mezzanine.

One route is via a 4m staircase at the back of the system, whilst the other is reached through a series of small staircases.

To fully utilise the space available, Locators also designed a small additional structure, which has been installed underneath the main mezzanine level.

At the back of the main structure there is a custom designed racking system to store various sizes of glass.

The system comprises of slanted back L-shaped steelwork sections, which have been covered with chipboard.

"The pigeon hole systems took a lot of detailing and had to be designed so that it could be easily and safely installed", says Lynette Baskett, Design and Contracts Engineer at Locators Storage Systems.

The actual structures were achieved by securing vertical lengths of chipboard between the horizontal boards to make the actual compartments.

Standard, medium sized boards were used wherever possible so that they were not too large to handle.

Once one level was safely and securely fitted, the installers then stood on that to fit the next level of pigeonholes.

To complete the system, each product hole was labelled to make production selection quick and easy.

"We chose Locators as we had worked with them before and knew they were extremely professional", says Nick Joscelyne, Branch Manager at Spaceage Plastics.

Originally founded in Poole Dorset 1981 as a family business specialising in rigid plastic fascia boards and cladding systems, Spaceage Plastics was acquired by Rok property solutions plc in 1997.

Since then the company has grown substantially, opening further branches in Birmingham and Reading.
