Energy efficiency is the top environmental consideration of commercial property occupiers reviewing future accommodation needs, said a UK report released by the CBI and GVA Grimley.

Research released by the CBI and GVA Grimley showed that 75% of firms are prepared to pay more to occupy a premises that is environmentally friendly Energy efficiency is the top environmental consideration of commercial property occupiers reviewing future accommodation needs, the report said

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of occupiers see energy efficiency as very important when looking at their property needs for the next five years, with 91% concerned at possible future increases in energy prices.

At a time when drought conditions are a possibility and water restrictions are already enforced in parts of the UK, companies also rate occupying water-efficient buildings as an important influence on their future choice of property.

Michael Roberts, CBI director of business environment policy, said: "What is particularly interesting is the high level of importance placed on the corporate benefits of greener buildings by firms in the finance and business service sector.

With the Government considering the introduction of an emissions trading scheme for the commercial sector, businesses in this sector are wise to start thinking about their options.".
