Four European IT magazines give excellent reviews to SAS3442X

LSI Logic is pleased to announce that its SAS3442X serial attached SCSI (SAS) host bus adapter has received excellent test results in independent reviews published in four European IT magazines.

The UK's leading computing publication PC Pro also awarded its prestigious 'Recommended' status to the product.

The LSI Logic SAS3442X was the first HBA in the industry to be launched for the SAS interface, a standard that is expected to account for 60% of the storage market by 2007.

According to the review in the November issue of Network Computing, "Serial attached SCSI (SAS) is without doubt one of the most exciting developments in hard disk interface technology, and it offers organisations an increased range of storage options.

The race to be first to market is clearly over, with LSI Logic first pass the post with its SAS PCI-X controller card." Storage magazine in the UK said of the product in its November issue.

"Once again, LSI Logic is first to market - and the SAS3442X shows clearly the potential of SAS.

It offers an excellent range of storage-related features and our performance tests show this technology is going to be a winner.

PC Pro reviewer Dave Mitchell awarded a full six stars for performance to the SAS3442X and five stars overall, concluding that, "LSI Logic will prove a very hard act to follow as the SAS3442X delivers on all counts." In addition to being the first storage adapter to market for SAS, the controller drew praise from all the reviewers for its performance with both SAS and SATA drives.

In a comparative test with an Ultra320 SCSI controller the SAS3442X produced similar performance when populated with up to three SAS drives, and was significantly faster than the SCSI solution when used with four SAS drives.

The four-drive SCSI set-up could achieve only 275MB/s, while the four SAS hard disks with the SAS3442X notched up an impressive 353MB/s.

Even with four low-cost SATA II drives the SAS3442X produced a speed of 272MB/s - comparable to that of the parallel SCSI system.

Interoperability with SAS drives from two different manufacturers - Fujitsu and Seagate - and with a mixed population including Western Digital Raptor SATA II hard disks, was also proven.
