Laser scanner checks complex mouldings

User of spray painting on plastics injection moulded parts with complex shapes and freeform surfaces will use a very fast laser scanning system to improve the quality inspection.

Wagner Spray Tech is to use a Laser Design Surveyor DM-1620 3D laser scanning system to improve the quality inspection process for injection-molded plastics parts Wagner specialises in innovative spray paint technology

The Surveyor DM-1620 is being used as it is ideal for scanning small- to medium-sized injection moulded plastics components that have complex shapes and freeform surfaces.

Laser Design scanners are also used for reverse engineering part prototypes.

Users can make a model made using an easily shaped material and then laser scan it quickly and accurately into a CAD file for testing.

Creating a detailed CAD model of a complex part is very difficult to do with traditional measuring instruments such as CMMs (coordinate measurement machines), said Laser Design, but this is the laser scanner's 'forte'.

The Surveyor DM-1620 is an accurate (+/-0.001in/+/- 0.03mm), fast, and very easy-to-use manual scanning system with a 16in x 20in (400x500mm) work area.

The compact DM-1620 system is easy to install and to maintain.

A CMM touch probe option is available for the DM-1620 for customers requiring contact as well as non-contact measurements.

The laser scanning system projects a line of laser light onto a part, while cameras continuously triangulate the changing distance and profile of the laser line as it sweeps along.

Therefore it eliminates the problems of missing data on an irregularly shaped surface.

The system measures fine details and captures complex freeform geometry so that the object can be exactly replicated or inspected.

Laser line scanners gather upwards of 50,000 points/s and generate huge numbers of data points without the need for complex templates or fixtures.

Surveyor Scan Control software adds versatility and functionality to the DM-1620 systems by controlling the laser probe settings and providing advanced data capture and editing features.

The digitized scan data can be processed further with optional software from Laser Design's Solutions Partners such as Geomagic.
