Abrasive fibre disc for high metal removal rates in stainless and mild steels in the welding and metal fabrication sectors removes metal up to 50% faster and lasts three times longer.

3M achieves its highest ever performance in a Cubitron Fibre Disc, delivering new levels of productivity and value for the most demanding metal removal applications Global innovations company 3M has developed a brand new fibre disc for applications requiring high metal removal rates in the welding and metal fabrication sectors Effective with both stainless and mild steels, the new 3M 985C Fibre Disc removes metal up to 50% faster and lasts up to three times longer than competitive discs

The 985C Fibre Disc contains 3M's Cubitron ceramic abrasive mineral combined with a grinding aid to enhance heat removal while working difficult materials like stainless steel.

The robust vulcanised fibre disc and advanced 3M resins used to bond the abrasives to the disc help to maximise disc life in the most aggressive high pressure grinding applications.

3M's Cubitron grain is a sol gel mineral that sharpens as it wears due to its unique two-phase microstructure.

When a Cubitron grain fractures the fracture plane veers off course as it hits the microstructures or 'platelets'.

As the microparticles break off, sharp new cutting edges are created.

These sharp cutting edges result in high cut rates, long life and amazing consistency.

"Our tests have demonstrated exceptionally high material removal rates and our longest ever disc life in high pressure grinding applications," says Dinah Hughes, product manager at 3M Abrasive Systems Division.

"Together, these factors deliver huge productivity benefits for users - benefits that go straight to their bottom line." To help users quantify the financial and productivity benefits of a switch to 985C Fibre Discs, 3M has developed a grinding cost calculator program that evaluates the savings made using the new discs in production applications.

"We are encouraging users to run trials with 985C Fibre Discs on their toughest grinding applications," says Hughes.

"Our programme will quickly tell them exactly how much time and money they will be able to save." 985C Fibre Discs are available in P24 (not available in 100mm size), P36, P50, P60 and P80 grades and in 100x16, 115x22 127x22 and 178x22 sizes.

Key applications for the new discs are expected to be found in weld bead removal, edge chamfering and anywhere where high metal removal rates and absolute productivity are a priority.
