Secondary finishing of a cast magnesium alloy part is, on the face of it, an easy task.
It can be shaped by most metalworking processes and is easily welded.
However there are some negatives too.
One magnesium die-caster recently reported considerable dissatisfaction with its existing coolant used for machining magnesium alloys.
The build-up of magnesium residue was presenting cleaning problems for both the machines involved and the parts they were producing.
Even with additives the sump life of the coolant was limited and therefore the product was proving far from cost efficient.
Its smell was also becoming the subject of complaint by machine operators.
The research conducted by Master Chemical indicates that the experiences of this particular die-casting company were not isolated.
Whilst there were coolants available purporting to meet the specific needs of those involved in magnesium machining, they were costly and did not adequately address all the issues.
Master Chemical introduction of its TRIM E737 sought to rectify these problems and one of the first companies to trial it was the magnesium die-caster.
TRIM E737 is a dedicated, cost competitive coolant which is compatible with all magnesium alloys and can withstand magnesium salt levels up to 4000 ppm.
It has been formulated to be exceptionally clean running and maintain tool sharpness for optimal cutting.
It is therefore ideal for 'big chip' machining of wrought and cast magnesium alloys.
The elimination of magnesium associated residues was immediately noted by the die-caster saving both time and costs associated with machine cleaning.
The bio-stability of the product also ensured a greatly extended sump life without the need for any additive; another huge saving.
Magnesium is known to be highly reactive and the company was pleased to report on the low hydrogen gas generation of TRIM E737, reducing fire risk.
The efficiency of TRIM E737 has resulted in the die caster reducing its coolant concentrate consumption by 50% and its costs by a substantial 23%.
