CNC lathe set-up is flexible to meet
future needs
Flexible set-up of a fixed head CNC production lathe allows the user to specify the machine - tooling up and down to suit its needs - giving a machine that is flexible to market trends.
BTMA member and sliding head lathe subcontractor, WML Engineering has purchased a Miyano BND 51SY fixed head lathe to cater for the needs of its continually changing marketplace Swansea based WML has continually turned work away as its current machines were not fully suited to the changing needs of the market - not the case anymore thanks to the installation of the Miyano BND 51SY

Bar lathe machines complex parts in one set-up
CNC turning centre with 26mm diameter bar capacity has 3D tooling heads and sliding type main and sub-spindles that have been designed to produce complex parts from bar in one set-up.
The company works predominantly in the medical, electronic, connector, hydraulic and automotive sectors and WML director Jason Meir comments: "We have been aware of Miyano machines and their capabilities for some time".
"With our customer base continually changing its needs, our sliding head machines were unable to meet the 32-50mm diameter range that customers often require".
"This purchase gives us a 51mm capacity, so it complements our sliding head machines perfectly".

Turning centre added to subcontract facility
Although predominantly a user of CNC sliding head automatics, a machine shop recently purchased a Miyano BNJ-42SY turning centre to increase flexibility and respond to customer needs.
Turning centre raises productivity 30-50%
A twin turret, twin spindle turning centre has helped an UK aerospace subcontractor to improve its machining productivity by an average of 30%, and up to a staggering 50% on many components.
CNC turning centres sold before the show started
Two fixed head CNC turning centres - to be shown at the UK's MACH 2006 exhibition - have already been sold, informs a UK supplier, which said the machines will bedelivered after the show.
"The new machine gives us capacity in new size and new batch ranges, which is very important to us." The procurement of the two inch capacity machine shows the changing requirements of WML customers.
The company gets enquiries for a complete package of components and out of the batch, 7 to 8 components will be under 32mm diameter whilst 2-3 parts will be anything up to 50mm diameter.
WML has recently found this trend growing and the Miyano will ensure the subcontractor does not turn this work away in future.
Another reason behind the purchase of the BND 51SY is the Y-axis capability.
With +/-40mm movement, it will enable the driven tooling to move laterally as well as vertically.
WML will utilise the power tooling to its maximum potential to machine complex parts with crossholes, flats and additional intricate functions.
Also suited to the needs of WML is the flexible tooling set-up with a 12 station turret, six of which accept revolving tools.
Meir continues: "Power tooling attachments can be added to increase the machine potential".
"The flexible set-up allows us to spec the machine as we require - we can tool up and down to suit our needs".
"This is important to subcontractors like us as we do not know what the future will bring; so we need a machine that is flexible to market trends." The machine will enable WML to manufacture short batch runs as opposed to its current high batch range.
Despite planning on using the machine for small batches of 200-500, the machine will be just as comfortable producing batches of 1000 to 10,000+.
Purchased at the EMO exhibition in Hanover in September, the machine has already been installed and is currently running.
With regard to operating the BND 51SY, Meir believes the programming, coding and power tooling are very similar to that of the sliding head machines already in operation at WML.
"I have always had faith in the Miyano product but have never had the market share to go out and buy a machine".
"Now it has been identified as a must have machine for our business".
"We now have the capability and capacity to compete on a wider spectrum in the turned parts sector".
"This machine ticked all the boxes and meets our specific needs very well," concludes Meir.
