CNC lathe set-up is flexible to meet future needs
Flexible set-up of a fixed head CNC production lathe allows the user to specify the machine - tooling up and down to suit its needs - giving a machine that is flexible to market trends.
As Peter Bewley, managing director of Bewley and Co commented: "Our customers are now finding that global competition makes it necessary for them to produce larger, more complex parts from tougher and more exotic materials.
Customers are now producing components too large or too complex to be produced on traditional 'Swiss Type' automatic lathes." Bewley and Co can now offer the latest range of Miyano CNC turning centres with capacities up to 64mm diameter.
As soon as the company became the new agent for Macro CNC, it sold a Miyano BNJ-42SY 7axis fixed head turning centre with 42mm diameter capacity to BTMA (British Turned Parts manufacturers' Association) member Swissmatic of Wishaw, Scotland.

Bar lathe machines complex parts in one set-up

Turning centre added to subcontract facility
Although predominantly a user of CNC sliding head automatics, a machine shop recently purchased a Miyano BNJ-42SY turning centre to increase flexibility and respond to customer needs.
Turning centre raises productivity 30-50%
A twin turret, twin spindle turning centre has helped an UK aerospace subcontractor to improve its machining productivity by an average of 30%, and up to a staggering 50% on many components.
Swissmatic managing director Jim Corbally commented: "The rotating guide bush in sliding head machines has difficulty supporting bar above 20mm diameter at high spindle speeds.
This is no problem with the Miyano fixed head machine and its exceptional rigidity for larger cuts provides productivity and surface finish improvements.
This is supported by an excellent swarf removal system with an integral swarf conveyor.
From feasibility studies, the Miyano BNJ-42SY is estimated to give us productivity improvements of up to 25%.
However, these are conservative estimates and I believe the Miyano will deliver improvements of anything up to 35-40%." In a similar position to Swissmatic, Auto Screw Products has for many years used sliding head CNC lathes and it has also seen its customers needs change in recent years.
This BTMA member has also found the need to diversify to deliver parts outside the 32mm diameter scope of its sliding head machines.
When Auto Screw had to meet its customer demands for parts up to the 42mm diameter range, the Knowsley based subcontractor immediately turned to Miyano and its BNJ-42SY turning centre.
Manufacturing components for the automotive, hydraulic, construction and plastics industries, Auto Screw typically produces batches from 500 to 20,000 on its eight Star sliding head lathes.
However, the deviation to slightly larger components set Auto Screw into a search for a larger capacity machine to manufacture small and large batch ranges alike with the added capability of producing increasingly complex parts.
A major factor in the purchase of the Miyano was the winning of a new contract for a spindle component for the automotive industry.
The 700mm long 25mm diameter part that is manufactured in batches of 10,000 would have proved a costly project if manufactured on the sliding head lathes.
The sliding head lathes could only produce three parts of the 316 stainless steel part per bar length, however the Miyano BNJ-42SY could produce four parts due to the shorter bar end produced by the Miyano.
With the high cost of stainless steel, this material and productivity saving on the Miyano reduced the costs of the project considerably.
Bewley and Co has sold a multitude of Miyano turning centres to companies like Quality Turnings, Riverside Engineering and Weald Park - all reflecting the same position as Auto Screw and Swissmatic.
As Bewley said: "These companies are all manufacturing parts with a wide variety of batch sizes and complexities; however the Miyano range comfortably produces exactly what the end user wants with alarming productivity rates.
The rigidity and power of the Miyano BNJ-42SY is allowing the end user to take deeper cuts that are delivering shorter cycle times, improved tool life and surface finish.
What we are finding more common is that customers are conducting feasibility studies on their machines and more often than not, the Miyano comes out as the most profitable machine in a customer's facility.
In certain instances the Miyano is now producing parts in the 20 to 32mm diameter range faster than sliding head machines," concluded Bewley.
