A major collaboration between Cardiff University, South Wales businesses and a global pharmaceutical company has led to a hugely successful new medical product, which has broken sales records.
Ultra Electronics launched a new identification badging printer called Magicard Alto Colour Printer with the help of engineers from Cardiff University, who contributed 3D specialist modelling, FEA and prototyping techniques.
"International sales of the product have climbed exceptionally rapidly since its launch," said Ray Coles, Managing Director of Ultra Electronics.
"Alto is the lowest priced ID card printer available in the world and we are delighted with the work done by the MEC (Manufacturing Engineering Centre)." Equipped with state-of-the-art multi functions, the machine can print a full colour portrait identification card in 30 seconds, communicate with most personal computers and capture portraits from a webcam.
Using advanced plastics saved in material costs and reduced the number of parts and labour, while strengthening the machine itself.
GX Design Engineers from Usk were responsible for the machine's ergonomic and innovative design.
