Welsh manufacturing experts help global
success
A major collaboration between Cardiff University, South Wales businesses and a global pharmaceutical company has led to a hugely successful new medical product, which has broken sales records.
The Clinitek Status, produced for Bayer, is a very low-cost, handy-sized diagnostic machine which can be used to detect abnormal levels of certain chemicals in urine to highlight potential concern or to confirm pregnancy or drug abuse Thanks to the development of low-cost optical elements, the device is a fraction of the cost of previous similar testing machines and is now being sold in 100 countries

Chairman praises Welsh engineering experts
The expertise and economic contribution made by Cardiff University's Manufacturing Engineering Centre have been praised by the chairman of the Welsh Development Agency.
Experts at Cardiff University's Manufacturing Engineering Centre used highly sophisticated machinery to produce ultra-realistic prototypes of the instrument as part of a collaborative venture with other members of the M4 Group of high-tech South Wales engineering and design companies - GX Design at Usk, Iota Sigma at Cross Keys, Drumlord at Abercarn, as well as Coil Industries in Staines.
The final engineering was carried out at Bayer Manufacturing in Suffolk.
Frank Marsh, marketing director of the University's Manufacturing Engineering Centre, said: "There is no doubt that the formation of the M4 Group in 1996 proved to be a crucial factor in obtaining the project and delivering everything that Bayer required in extraordinarily short timescales".
" We have all the skills necessary to create, develop and manufacture advanced products rapidly in Wales.".
