A McBain Instruments product story

The McBain-Environology Rapid Threat Assessment Kit (RTAK) is designed to enable first responders to quickly assess the nature of suspicious powder threats in the field.

The McBain-Environology Rapid Threat Assessment Kit (RTAK) is designed to enable first responders to quickly assess the nature of suspicious powder threats in the field.

Developed in conjunction with law enforcement professionals and toxicologists - and the Los Angeles Police Department's Hazardous Material/Environmental Crimes Unit - the kit is designed to strengthen and integrate into existing field response protocols.

RTAK features a proprietary assessment algorithm that allows the user to quickly categorise a suspect powder as either harmless or a potential threat.

The kit is not intended to replace the more sophisticated analysis of licensed laboratories or federal authorities, but to quickly distinguish potentially dangerous substances from harmless ones, thereby enabling first responders to safely and efficiently process the high volume of incidents currently facing communities.

Features include: Leica DMLS clinical microscope; LED illumination (80hr battery); plan phase optics (10x, 40x, 100x); digital camera forensic collection kit; assessment algorithm; detailed training materials; custom secured travel case for equipment protection, easy transport and contamination containment.

Jonathan Hall, Law Enforcement, Hazardous Materials Technician/Specialist, comments: "RTAK enables me to make critical decisions and minimises mistakes by applying its solid science.

"This kit should be the basic standard for all technical first responders for evaluating unknown powders".

The strength of the RTAK algorithm is in its capacity to consider a broad range of substances and quickly sort between threats and non-threats.

Typically the entire procedure can be completed in 15-30 minutes, greatly reducing downtime at critical facilities and potentially reducing the number of samples that must be sent to a laboratory for specific analysis.

A beneficial feature when closure of a facility has severe economic impacts, such as airports, sporting venues and theme parks.

The Rapid Threat Assessment Kit (RTAK) is sold exclusively through Haztech Systems as the MicroCat.
