CNC drill, tap centre can be as long as is wanted

A Meddings Flott product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Apr 27, 2004

Modular, long-bed CNC drilling, tapping and light milling centre, with positioning accuracy of +/-8 micron, is for machining construction and general engineering long workpieces.

Market niche for drilling, tapping and light milling long workpieces is being explored by Meddings Flott, which launched a modular, long bed drilling, tapping and milling centre at MACH 2004.

Malcolm Drury of ATC Products, which produces drilling heads and automatic toolchangers, had long had an idea for producing such a long bed machine for the construction and general engineering industries.

The idea is to produce a mid-range accuracy machine, typically with a positioning repeatability of +/-8 microns.

The travelling gantry machine has precision rack drives for the X and Y movements and the standard machining width capacity is 1000mm.

Machine length can be as long as the user wants, said Meddings Machine Tools at the show.

The bed is built up from 1m x 1m welded steel modules.

Meddings said that two long-bed GDT machining centres had been sold "off the drawing board".

One user is a producer of precision racks and is using the GDT to machine bolt holes.

The GDT's travelling bridge, holding an 8kW, ISO 30 machining head, can also machine items over the end of the machine bed.

The machine shown at MACH 2004 had a bed length of 3m, fast traverse speeds of up to 40m/min, automatic compensation on the rack drives and Osai CNC with bolt hole drilling macros.

As viewed, price was GBP 69,500.

Leadtime from order to delivery is 12 weeks, depending on bed length.

Product business manager for Meddings, Keith Adams, said that Meddings is now recruiting new staff to cover GDT enquiries and the improving market for its precision Meddings Flott drilling machines (Ed).
