Mate CNC punch press slitting tools have long life

A Mate Precision Tooling product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Apr 8, 2008

CNC punching tools designed by Mate for users of Trumpf CNC punch presses include a long life slitting tool and a catalogue describing a wide range of tooling for Trumpf presses.

Mate LongLife slitting tool system for Trumpf style punch presses combines premium tool steel punch and die inserts with robust punch and die holders for the most cost effective slitting tool solution.

Mate marketing manager, Andy Spence Parsons said that Mate LongLife tooling is designed to replace conventional punches and dies, thereby delivering exceptional value to the fabricating process.

He said: "It provides fabricators with another option to improve productivity and profitability".

Mate LongLife consists of the following tool components with benefits.

* Punch inserts extend tool life - Mate LongLife punch inserts are manufactured from premium high speed steel to provide the maximum interval between regrinds.

They are available in two standard sizes: 5.00 x 56.00mm rectangle and 5.00 x 76.20mm rectangle.

* Punch Insert Holders speed set-up - a choice of two insert punch holders is available.

One includes an integral alignment ring for fast and precise tool setup.

The second requires a heavy duty alignment ring to allow manual angle setting flexibility.

Mate LongLife punch holders work with conventional machine strippers.

* Die inserts suit up to 3.00mm mild steel - die inserts are available in two standard sizes, 5.00 x 56mm rectangle and 5.00 x 76.20mm rectangle with 0.10mm die clearance increments from +0.10mm to +0.60mm.

* Die insert holders with precise orientation - the die inserts are assembled into one of two die insert holders: one to suit the 56mm long inserts and one to suit the 76.2mm inserts.

These die insert holders include precise angular orientation at 0 and 90 deg for maximum flexibility.

A range of high performance Mate tooling systems for Tumpf punch presses - including the slitting tools - are described in a new brochure.

The full range of Trumpf punch press tooling by Mate is included in an expanded, recently released catalogue.

* Mate Trumpf tooling catalogue - an expanded 64-page Mate Trumpf tooling catalogue (international edition) contains a comprehensive overview of each of Mate's tooling systems with complete metric specifications that are compatible with Trumpf punch presses.

Products included are as follows.

* Mate Next Tooling System - high performance tooling system designed to maximize tool life, minimize tool set up times, and dramatically reduce tooling costs.

* Mate LongLife - a fully OEM compatible slitting tool system that combines premium tool steel punch and die inserts with robust punch and die holding for the most cost effective slitting tool solution.

The system replaces conventional punches and dies to deliver exceptional value.

* Mate QuickLock Tooling System - combines the economy of conventional Trumpf style tooling with operating features for quicker tool setups and maximum machine productivity.

* Mate Trumpf Style Tooling System - designed to produce high quality piece parts with economy.

* Mate Multi Tool System - tooling to suit Trumpf's exclusive range of five-station, 10-station, four-station and six-station multi tool assemblies.

Included in the catalogue is a 'Product Selector' overview of each Mate tooling system with eight different ratings for each tooling system.

Helpful comparisons are made of factors such as quick set up, interchangeability, grind life, ease of use, value and purchase price.

The catalogue's revised page layout simplifies the ordering process by presenting the essential information in an 'at-a-glance' format.

Also included in the new catalog are the following.

* Mate's Maxima coating for increasing tool life two to 10 times.

* Mate's Slug Free dies that eliminate slug pulling.

* Mate's Eurostyle tooling and slitting assemblies for precision and rigidity of guided shearing assemblies.

The catalogue also contains information on special assembly tools and shapes.

Mate told manufacturingtalk that fabricators will find that by integrating formed features into sheet metal components using these tools greatly expands their ability to add value to the punching process.

* Punch and die maintenance - the catalogue includes essential information about punch and die maintenance, including grinding wheel specifications, and feed rates for sharpening.

In addition, there is comprehensive information about calculating punching force and selecting the correct die clearance.

Using the correct die clearance is the single most important contributing factor to achieving extended tool life and maximizing piece part quality, said Mate.

The catalogue provides practical tips on how to achieve this.

* Tips and techniques - the catalogue has a Mate 'Tips and Techniques' section with information on methods for separating parts using long, narrow rectangles, what to do when galling occurs, eliminating bolts and lockwashers, combating material warp, recommended distances between punched holes and many more suggestions for cost-effective punching.
