Automatic winders speed pipe/profile extrusion

A Meltech Engineering product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team May 22, 2006

Semi- and automatic winding machines enable plastics pipes and profiles to be extruded at up to 250m/min and eliminate the need for changeovers and manual handling of reels.

Winding plastics extrusion pipes and profiles at up to 250m/min is now possible with a new range of semi and fully automated winding machines from Meltech Engineering.

The Meltech machines eliminate the need for changeovers and manual handling of reels and allow faster, continuous production of plastics extrusions.

Designed for pipes and profiles, as well as complex profiles such as those used in a wide range of markets including food packaging, agriculture and medical equipment, the Meltech machines are high speed, twin head winding machines capable of speeds up to 250m/min.

The turret headed machines allow automatic changeover of the winding reels ensuring continuous production of extruded plastics.

In semi-automated operation the winding machine operator manually removes the full reel and replaces it with an empty reel.

When fully automated the winding system includes discharge conveyors from the machine which take the reels through to a pallet stacking machine.

It also allows plastics manufacturers to use larger reels far bigger than those that could be handled by an operator.

* Multiple profile extrusions - automated winding of extrusion profiles comes into its own when handling continuous multiple extrusions.

The Meltech machines are able to offer continuous winding of multiple profiles, enabling significant productivity benefits compared with manual handling.

According to Meltech engineering sales and marketing director, Peter Drever, there has been a sharp increase in demand for automated winding systems from plastics extruders.

"The international market for plastic extrusions is highly competitive".

"Automated and semi-automated winding of pipe and profiles makes a big difference to a company's productivity and competitiveness," he said.

Readily integrated within extrusion production operations, the Meltech machines feature touch screen PLC control and are easy-to-use and reliable.

Reel sizes start at 300mm; a bespoke engineering service is also available.
