When lightening struck the central information systems and TV monitor screens at Snow Hill station in Birmingham it left passengers wondering which train was going where and when.

You can guarantee that if something goes wrong or if a disaster is to strike it will be at the weekend when there's no one around to help.

And that was the situation when lightening struck the central information systems and TV monitor screens at Snow Hill station in Birmingham leaving passengers wondering which train was going where and when.

It was down to Business Manager Richard Brooks to try and rectify the situation, his prompt action led to a call to one of Europe's leading suppliers of intelligent messaging systems.

Based in the Midlands themselves, they reacted immediately and despatched their National sales Manager, Mr Jim Francis to do a site survey and formulate a plan to provide an almost instant solution.

Owing to the urgency of the situation, it was decided that Messagemaker would supply, from stock, one of its 4 line 21 character IP Noticeboards.

These tri colour displays embrace the latest surface mount technology, which allows the information to be displayed over a very wide viewing angle and are provided with both serial and TCP/IP connectivity as standard.

However, in this particular case the fact that all 'messagemaker' displays come with lightning protection on both the power and data ports was a major contributing factor.

"All in all the response time from the original lightening strike to the installation of the new display was a total of 3 days," said Richard Brookes, "and when you consider that it included a weekend, I really don't believe we could have bettered the performance of the supplying company." So pleased were Central Trains with both the product and the service provided by Messagemaker that they have since been supplied with a second display.
