An Indian forgemaster is to install a German-built counterblow forging hammer - one of the largest yet made - capable of delivering 800kJ of energy for making large crankshafts.

Bharat Forge, global market leader for forgings, has placed an order with Muller Weingarten, Germany, for a counterblow hammer delivering energy of 800kJ The hammer is the centerpiece of one of the world's most advanced and largest forging lines for large parts, to be set up at Bharat Forge in Pune/India

"We have not produced such a large hammer for a long time and so far only three hammers of this size exist worldwide," said Ulrich Kienle, sales director of the Forging Business Segment at Muller Weingarten.

Beyond producing the hammer, Muller Weingarten is responsible for the entire engineering and for the primary control of the forging line, which will see the production of large crankshafts for marine and heavy diesel engines from 2008 onwards.

The entire line is automated by railbound manipulators moving the crankshafts measuring up to 4m in length and weighing to three tonnes, more than a medium-sized vehicle, through the line.

"With this forging line we will be able to produce top-quality crank-shafts even more economically in future," reported Baba Kalyani, CEO of Bharat Forge.

Construction of the hammer will be under-way in Weingarten, Germany, until mid-2007 and the line will go into operation in Pune at the beginning of 2008.

* Personnel changes - on November 1 Jochen Frueh will take over the reins of the Forging Business Segment.

Following the departure of Axel Wittig (who has taken over the management of Muller Weingarten Werkzeuge), he is part of the new Forging Business management team along with Ulrich Kienle (director of sales) and Marcus Bieg (director of design).

Since joining Muller Weingarten AG in 2001, Jochen Frueh held the position of sales director of the Automatic Blanking and Forming Presses Segment.

"I'm looking forward to this new challenge in the Forging Business and will carry the successful work of this segment forward into the future", said Frueh.

His plans will see expanding the market presence in Asia and tapping new markets in eastern Europe.
