One mobile module works with any gauge

A MicroRidge Systems product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Feb 12, 2008

One module can be used by a roving inspector to capture measurements from any digital gage and RS-232 device just by changing the cable.

MicroRidge Systems has introduced its Universal Mobile Module, which can connect to new and existing instruments or inspection gauges with digital or RS-232 output just by changing the cable.

The Universal Mobile Module is intended for use by the roving inspector or anywhere it is inconvenient to have the gauge connected to an interface by a cable.

The following are some key features of the new Universal Mobile Module.

* Used to capture measurements from any digital gage and RS-232 device just by changing the cable.

* Battery life is typically measured in years.

* LED placement provides highly visible user feedback and indicates that the measurement was received by the Base unit.

* Advanced power management eliminates the need for on/off switch.

* Uses one commonly available Photo Lithium battery.

* Firmware (software within the Mobile Module) is upgradeable in the field.

Data from the Mobile Module is sent to a MiniStation configured as a Base unit.

* Compact design measures 2.137in x 1.44in x 0.79in and weights 1.6oz.

It fits very nicely on the back of a caliper.

* Threaded inserts and captive panel screws used to secure the Mobile Module case cover.

You will not lose screws or strip threads in plastics case when changing cables or replacing batteries.

* If you need to replace your gauge cable or install a cable for a different brand or type of gauge, you can do this at the site.

* User can replace the battery and gauge cable without removing the Mobile Module from the gauge.

* Highly visible LEDs indicate successful gauge reading and transmission.

* Uses a durable plastics injection molded case designed for industrial and manufacturing environments, and is connected to your gauge with a flexible cable.

* The wireless antenna is completely enclosed and protected within the module case.

First released in October 2006, the GageWay Wireless System is a flexible wireless measurement collection solution that increases the accuracy of your handheld gauging data, while eliminating the time spent manually entering that data into your computer.

The system is designed for industrial and manufacturing environments or any location where you need to connect digital or RS-232 gauges and RS-232 devices to a computer through a wireless connection.

In its simplest form, the GageWay Wireless System consists of a MiniStation Base unit connected to a PC receiving wireless data from a single Remote unit (Mobile Module or MiniStation Remote), or it can be as complicated as multiple Bases receiving data from dozens of Remote units or Mobile Modules.

MicroRidge told manufacturingtalk.com that the GageWay Wireless System has been designed to integrate with the way measurement collection is typically done.

Measurements are collected in a work area and are sent to a local computer rather than trying to send measurements collected on the plant floor to a single location.

The GageWay Wireless System offers easy-to-use, durable and reliable wireless measurement collection that 'simply works' and includes the following key features.

* Assemble a simple or complex wireless system using two types of hardware components (MiniStations and Universal Mobile Modules).

* Change the MiniStation to a Base, Relay or Remote by installing new firmware (available at no cost on our web site).

* Firmware updates for the entire wireless system are available at no charge on our web site.

* For non-mobile applications consider MiniStation Remotes sending data to a MiniStation Base.

* Works with any computer that has a USB or serial port.

* Can be easily integrated with any gage interface or with any SPC/DAQ application software.

* You are not locked into using a particular manufacturer's line of gages.

* Provides expandability and flexibility options that are needed in a wireless system.

MicroRidge is celebrating its 25th year designing, manufacturing and marketing 'Measurement Collection Technology for Today and Tomorrow' with their broad range of GageWay interfaces, WedgeLink keyboard wedges, and the GageWay Wireless System.
