Six weeks before the recent MACH show, an order was placed on Mills Manufacturing Technology for a GBP 300,000 Daewoo ACE HP630 horizontal machining centre by Wolverhampton-based Marquin Engineering.

Six weeks before the recent MACH show, an order was placed on Mills Manufacturing Technology for a Daewoo ACE HP630 horizontal machining centre, the purchaser of the GBP 300,000 machine being Wolverhampton-based Marquin Engineering.

The subcontractor took delivery of the of the 1000mm by 800mm by 850mm working envelope machine at midnight on the Tuesday before Easter, the unsociable hour avoiding blocking local roads which carry heavy traffic during the day.

It is noteworthy that even before an exhibition starts, it can help to secure a machine tool sale.

Speaking on the Mills stand at MACH, George Spencer, who with his brother Edward recently completed purchase of Marquin Engineering from their parents, commented, "The Daewoo machining centre was in stock and we anticipated that if it were shown here at MACH 2002 it would be sold, so we decided to get in first.

It was installed within a week of our placing the order, and that included a major strip-down to accommodate the limited access to our premises." Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the 15-man, ISO 9001-accredited subcontractor has high profile customers such as JCB.

It also specialises in work for the rail and power transmission industries, two sectors that were adversely affected by the Hatfield crash and foot and mouth respectively.

These disasters, combined with difficult trading conditions during the last two years, did little to encourage investment in capital plant.

Nevertheless, the Spencer brothers reasoned that there was business to be won and the successful companies would be those that invested in additional, modern production capacity.

Continued George, "We bought a Daewoo lathe from Mills two years ago and have been very happy with the quality of build and the after sales service.

The latter in particular is paramount for us, as our machines run 24 hours a day and uptime is crucial to profitability.

We believe a company can only expand in partnership with machine tool suppliers that may be relied on absolutely, like Mills." .
