VMC has advanced conversational programming

A Mills Manufacturing Technology product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Apr 7, 2004

Fitted with a Heidenhain control and intended for mould and tool makers, a VMC has highly developed conversational programming features combined with its ability to accept programs prepared off-line.

The new Daewoo ACE VM510 is the Korean manufacturer's first vertical machining centre to be fitted with a Heidenhain control, in this case the IT NC 530.

Having made its first appearance at the Milan EMO last year, the machine will be launched in the UK at Mills Manufacturing Technologies' forthcoming in-house exhibition of Daewoo machines - DIMF EUROPA 2004 - to be held from 20th to 22nd April in Leamington Spa.

The CNC system makes the machine attractive to mould and tool makers due to the control's highly developed conversational programming features combined with its ability to accept programs prepared off-line.

High-speed contour milling assisted by 'intelligent control' software is standard, allowing maximum productivity to be extracted from the 16m/min cutting feed rate in all axes while at the same time ensuring a top quality surface finish.

Rapid traverse in X/Y/Z are 30/30/24 m/min respectively.

The mechanical attributes of the machine have the tool maker firmly in mind.

Working envelope is 1020 x 510 x 625mm and the 1200 x 500mm table can accept workpieces weighing 800kg.

Ten-minute rating of the 10,000 rpm spindle is an impressive 28kW, delivered between 1,500 and 5,920 rpm, allowing high rates of metal removal even when roughing hardened steel.

Continuous power rating of the motor is 18.5kW, which drives the 40 taper spindle directly for fast acceleration/deceleration and minimum vibration.

Dimensional accuracy of machined features is high owing to the thermally symmetrical design of the VM series, isolation of structural elements from heat sources, oil cooling of the spindle, and the highly rigid, one-piece bed and box-type column castings, all made from fine-grained meehanite which exhibits excellent vibration absorption characteristics.

Positioning accuracy is +/-5 microns full stroke, with +/-2 microns repeatability.

The tool magazine accepts 24 (optionally 30) cutters and with adjacent pockets empty, tools of 150mm diameter can be deployed.

Tool change is achieved in 8 seconds chip-to-chip, although a high speed ATC unit can be specified that almost halves this time.
