CNC lathes investment gains more work
Investment in three CNC lathes - including an 8-axis turning centre - has enabled a UK subcontractor to win new business through being able to machine more complex parts economically.
Market-leading Leicestershire, UK-based precision engineering specialist - G-Mach Engineering - has recently invested in three new Doosan Daewoo machine tools supplied by Mills Manufacturing Technology , Leamington The machines - one Lynx 220 (2-axis) lathe; one Lynx 220LM (3-axis lathe) and a Puma TT 1500SY (8-axis twin turret - twin spindle turning centre) - were installed at the company's Melton Mowbray facility late last year (2006) and, in just a couple of months, have made a significant impact on G-Mach's productivity and competitiveness

Said G-Mach's managing director Graham Miller: "The new machines not only give us extra machining capability - they have also (especially in the case of the TT 1500 machine) enabled us to win new business that we wouldn't have been able to secure prior to us making these new investments." Since its installation the TT 1500SY machine has been operating around the clock (24/7) machining complex electrical connector components (240 parts per day / one part every 6 minutes).
These parts - manufactured from aluminium and involving seven different machining operations (turning, boring, drilling, threading, chamfering, de-burring, etc) are completed in one set-up on the TT 1500 machine.
To achieve the desired accuracy, repeatabilities and throughput required - full use of the machine's twin-turret/ twin-spindle and integrated Y-axis (upper turret +/-50mm) capability is made.

Continued Miller: "Attempting this work without a multi-axis and multi-tasking machine wouldn't be economically viable.
We have been able to reduce job set up times and benefit from the efficiency of one-hit machining with the TT 1500 and, because the machine is also highly accurate, fast, totally reliable and can be left to run unattended - we can increase throughput, meet lead times, ensure cost-competitiveness and protect our margins." The situation is similar with G-Mach's new Lynx 220 lathes which are being used (at present) to manufacture high-precision complex aerospace components (small batch) made from Inconel where, in the case of the 3-axis Lynx 220 LM lathe, the machine's fully integrated C-axis with 5.5kW 6,000 rev/min mill-drill capability - means that jobs can be completed in one hit.
Concluded Miller: "The new Doosan Daewoo machines have helped us raise our game again and have made us more competitive.
We're winning new business as a direct consequence of making these investments." * About G-Mach Engineering - G-Mach first established in 1993 today employs over 20 people at its 6,000ft2 facility in Melton Mowbray.
The company first started trading as a general machining job shop - but through strategic investment in the very latest machining and manufacturing technologies has moved into the high-precision end of the market.
At present the company has 14 CNC machine tools which now includes (with the recent investments) six Doosan Daewoo machines supplied by Mills.
G-Mach manufactures high-precision components for a number of industries and manufacturing sectors - aerospace/defence, electronics, security lock, telecommunications, medical, oil and gas and motor sport.
Parts manufactured by G-Mach are often machined in small - medium batches and range in size - typically 6mm - 200mm diameter.
Materials machined include aluminium, stainless, hard materials (Inconel) and exotic alloys etc - and parts are machined to close tolerances (0.01mm).
As well as providing in-house world-class subcontract CNC milling and turning services to its customers - the company also provides other specialist services (grinding, heat treatment, electro-plating, etc) - and has sophisticated CAD/CAM capability (FeatureCam) which is DNC-linked to G-Mach's machines, and impressive inspection and CMM equipment located in a temperature controlled environment.
