MMMA trophy in craft competition awarded

The new Metalforming Machinery Makers' Association Trophy in the ISME (Institute of Sheet Metal Engineering) National Craft Awards Competition 2004 has been awarded to David Petch, aged 17.

The new Metalforming Machinery Makers' Association (MMMA) Trophy in the ISME (Institute of Sheet Metal Engineering) National Craft Awards Competition 2004 has been awarded to David Petch, aged 17 a 2nd year apprentice at BAE Systems in Brough, Yorkshire at the Judging and Awards ceremony held at Jaguar Cars Ltd in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham on Wednesday 23 June 2004 His award was presented to him by Tim Albutt, Chairman of the MMMA His entry in the Open Class of a Harrier RCS ducting used as part of the reaction control system controlling the pitch and yaw of the aircraft was judged the best that demonstrated the use of metalforming machinery in the manufacture of the component

The Open class is open to competitors of all ages, with no restriction on the size or design of the work piece or on the materials used, the only stipulation being that the piece uses sheet metal as the principal material.

Petch, from Selby in Yorkshire, is a Sheet Metal Work Apprentice and was encouraged to enter by his Senior Team Leader, Shaun Hairsine.

Petch spent around 3 months in total to complete his project with guidance from his two workplace assessors Glenn White and Andy Howard, who are responsible for guiding him throughout his training.

The whole project was fitted in around his day to day work as an apprentice.

Shaun Hairsine said: "This MMMA award is in recognition of the hard work that David has put into this project and also serves as a superb test of the skills and abilities, which we are teaching all our apprentices." The ISME National Craft Awards are given in association with Jaguar Cars to young artisans from the Sheet Metal Industry, who measure their skills against others in the industry.

There are two classes of entry, the 'Open' Class for all ages with no restrictions on design, but majority of material used to be sheet metal and the 'Test Piece' Class, where a piece stipulated by ISME is judged on dimensional accuracy, finish, quality of workmanship, suitability of seams and joints submitted with a written account of the work involved.

Support from the MMMA has been given over a number of years, but has been enhanced this year through the presentation of the new 'MMMA Trophy'.

Tim Albutt, MMMA Chairman said: "The MMMA is pleased to promote the skills and expertise that is found in young people within the Sheet Metal Industry.

The level and expertise of this year's entrants is exceptional and it shows that we still have so much experience and so many skills in our manufacturing industries.

These young artisans are our future.

I would like to congratulate all the entrants on the standard of their entries.

To have made a judgement as to who was best has been a very difficult but pleasant task.".
