BAE apprentice wins MMMA Trophy
The MMMA Trophy in the ISME National Craft Awards Competition 2005 has been awarded to Jamie Adamson, a 2nd year metalworking apprentice at BAE Systems.
The Metalforming Machinery Makers' Association (MMMA) Trophy in the ISME (Institute of Sheet Metal Engineering) National Craft Awards Competition 2005 has been awarded to Jamie Adamson, aged 18 and a 2nd year metalworking apprentice at BAE Systems in Brough, Yorkshire, UK, at the Judging and Awards ceremony held at Jaguar Cars in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham on Wednesday 22 June 2005.
The award was presented by MMMA Chairman, Mike Hall.
His entry in the Open Class of a Hawk Jacket Pipe Fitting was judged to have best demonstrated the use of metalforming machinery in the manufacture of the component.
The Open class is open to competitors of all ages, with no restriction on the size or design of the work piece or on the materials used, the only stipulation being that the piece uses sheet metal as the principal material.
Andrew Richmond, Adamson's Training Associate at BAE Systems said: "We had three entries in the competition this year and we encourage a number of our apprentices to enter every year".
"The award of the MMMA Trophy is recognition of all the hard work that Jamie has put into the project and serves as a test of the skills and abilities he has learnt and which he will take forward into his future career.
Adamson would like to thank all of the people he has worked with within the DAPC dept at BAE Systems, Brough and especially Glenn White and Andy Howard who have coached, guided and assessed Adamson throughout his apprenticeship.
The annual ISME National Craft Awards are given in association with Jaguar Cars to young apprentices and artisans from the sheet metal industry, measuring their skills against others in the industry.
There are two classes of entry, the 'Open' Class for all ages with no restrictions on design, but majority of material used to be sheet metal and the 'Test Piece' Class, where a piece stipulated by ISME is judged on dimensional accuracy, finish, quality of workmanship, suitability of seams and joints submitted with a written account of the work involved.
The MMMA has supported for awards over a number of years, but was enhanced in 2004 through the presentation of a 'MMMA Trophy'.
Hall said: "The MMMA is very pleased to be associated with the promotion of skills and expertise found in young people within the sheet metal industry".
"The level and expertise of all the entrants this year has been exceptional and it just goes to show that in a time when manufacturing is probably not the 'buzz' word in the UK economy, we still have so many skills in our manufacturing industries".
"These young people are our future".
"I would like to congratulate them all on the exceptional standard of their entries".
"To decide who was best in the use of metal forming machinery in their entries was difficult, due to the excellent craftmanship on show, but I must say it has been a most enjoyable task.
