Discrimination Of Fine And Coarse Particles
Viaton Industries, is using the Malvern Mastersizer 2000 particle size analyzer to control the production of advanced ceramics such as Barium Titanate and Magnesium Zirconate materials.
Viaton Industries (UK), one of Europe's largest contract processors in the field of particle reduction, is using the Malvern Mastersizer 2000 particle size analyzer to control the production of advanced ceramics such as Barium Titanate and Magnesium Zirconate materials for its customer Thermograde Process Technology.
The Mastersizer's ability to accurately and reliably measure materials across a wide dynamic range has proved especially important in processing these products.
Thermograde Process Technology is a leading chemical processor specialising in high temperature inorganic solid-state reactions.
Its Barium Titanate products are used as heavy metal scavengers in fuel cracking catalysts in order to preserve the activity of the main zeolite catalyst.
The scavenging ability is directly related to particle size, with fine particles having a higher surface area and consequently a higher reactivity rate.
Milling is therefore carried out within strict specifications which ensure that over 99% of the material is below 10 microns in size.
Magnesium Zirconate is used in electro-ceramics, where the particle size is not only important in defining the electrical properties of the fired ceramic but also the strength of the ceramic film.
The presence of coarse particles or agglomerates will affect the mechanical strength of the component by causing defect formation during sintering, even if most of the material is of a much finer size.
The ability to identify and control the presence of these during the processing of the raw powdered material is therefore vitally important.
The Mastersizer 2000 is used by Viaton to monitor and control many different micronisation processes and was selected by the company primarily for its ability to measure over a wide size range from 0.02 to 2000 microns using either wet or dry sample dispersions.
It has proved to be easy to use and requires minimal operator training.
