Particle size analyser investigates fuel injectors

A Malvern Instruments product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Jun 13, 2007

Researchers at CORIA, part of the University of Rouen in France, have utilised a Spraytec particle size analyser from Malvern Instruments to gain new insight into fuel injector behaviour.

Researchers at Complexe de Recherche Interprofessionnel en Aerothermochemie (CORIA), part of the University of Rouen in France, have utilised a Spraytec particle size analyser from Malvern Instruments to gain new insight into fuel injector behaviour.

Their research supports the automotive industry in the development of new injector technologies.

Critical for this work is the extremely fast 10 kHz measurement rate of the Spraytec system, and also its ability to accurately measure dense sprays.

Malvern and CORIA are jointly continuing with further research to optimise methods for the analysis of concentrated, rapid, spray systems; the results will be published during 2007.

Research at CORIA is currently focused on aspects of the design and operation of injectors for combustion applications.

Of particular interest are port fuel, and direct injection and diesel injection systems for the automotive industry.

The Spraytec delivers the temporal resolution necessary to study the very short, pulsed events that characterise these systems.

The Spraytec is specifically designed to be a robust tool for industrially relevant spray analysis.

It has an open bench configuration and a wide dynamic range, features that were highlighted by the CORIA team as being extremely important for their work.

A multiple scattering algorithm ensures that concentrated sprays are accurately measured.

The ongoing joint research between CORIA and Malvern is intended to provide guidance on the operation of this algorithm.
