Before switching suppliers, a major automotive engine manufacturer was struggling to produce consistent quality engine components with Mapal reamers and had to make frequent cutting fluid changes.

Prior to Metalworking Lubricant Services (MLS)' introduction, A major automotive engine manufacturer with a UK plant was struggling to produce consistent quality engine components with Mapal reamers They were also suffering from frequent cutting fluid changes due to tramp oil emulsification, resulting in a significant loss of surface finish

The usefulness of MLS' initial on-site consultation became quickly apparent when MLS' consultant engineers proved that significant tooling benefits were possible while also increasing sump life to a guaranteed minimum of 12 months.

The impact of these measures produced savings equal to three times annual metalworking fluid costs.

MLS were able to demonstrate significant tool life reductions from 1 blade per week to 1 blade per 6 months for each machine performing Mapal reaming.

This represented an annual saving of approximately GBP 20,000 per year, while the prevention of tool breakage eliminated the necessity for any rework.

Subsequently, the tap breakage rate was also reduced from 18 to 1 a month saving another GBP 8,000 per year.

MLS initially extended sump life to 18 months, thus saving five coolant changes per machine each year with a production saving of 60h per machine.

Sump life was later further extended to 30 months, this was achieved without the use of pH boosters or biocides.

Surface finish was maintained throughout the metalworking lubricants life, the excellent properties of the cutting fluid produced a consistent finish of 1.0 micron maximum.
