Company offers range of ion analysis

A Metrohm UK product story

Metrohm provides a range of ion analysis technologies under one roof: from potentiometric and Karl Fischer titration via VA (ultra) trace and ion chromatography to meter for pH, ion and conductivity measurement as well as software, peripheral units, dosing and liquid handling products plus sensors and electrodes.

All these products form a powerful range of tools providing ease of use for analytical laboratories.

Metrohm's high-quality instruments are made in Switzerland.

The determination of the activity of an enzyme, or the monitoring of the release kinetics of antacid drugs requires a titrator that rapidly adjusts a predefined pH value and keeps it constant over a long time period.

The 842 Titrando's controller has been optimised for this task and is among the best available on the market.

It can also be used to determine the kinetics of acid-base or redox reactions.

Tandem dosing is a new feature offered by the 842 Titrando.

To avoid a break in dosing when the buret is refilled, a second buret takes over the dosing operation without any interruption.

This means that fast reactions and those that have high reagent consumption can be monitored without any loss of accuracy.

The Titrando is the central building block of a flexible titration system that, apart from the titrator itself, also includes dosing systems and stirrers, as well as additional components for communication and automation.

The determination of anions and cations in pharmaceutical products that contain particles, not water soluble parts, or are emulsions can be carried out quickly and without any problems with the Metrohm dialysis system and without damaging the separating column.

The use of dialysis as an inline sample preparation step results in a rapid automated analysis system.

The Metrohm dialysis method works according to the stopped-flow principle: about 10ml of the sample is passed along the dialysis membrane by the peristaltic pump built into the 838 Advanced IC Injection Sample Processor (2.838.0020), while the acceptor solution remains at rest.

The acceptor solution is then transferred to the sample loop of the 812 Valve Unit and the sample is analysed in the normal manner.

High reproducibility, long membrane life, dialysis rates >98 percent and very low detection limits make the Metrohm IC dialysis system into a powerful tool for overcoming difficult application problems.

According to the European Pharmacopoeia the water content of many pharmaceuticals is determined by loss on drying in a drying cabinet or desiccator.

Usually these are substances that cannot be analysed by means of direct Karl Fischer titration.

We recommend an automated Karl Fischer oven system - consisting of the 774 Oven Sample Processor and a KF coulometer - for water determination.

The values obtained with this system all lie within the ranges specified in the Pharmacopoeia and show excellent repeatability.

* Considerably increased sample throughput: improved efficiency and time-savings.

* Manual sample preparation is reduced to a minimum.

* No contamination of the oven and titration cell and therefore no carry-over and memory effects.

* Much lower reagent consumption.

* Improved water release from the sample as the carrier gas passes directly through the sample.
