Deep hole drilling takes a step forward
Mollart Machine Tools has redefined the concept and capability of deep hole drilling with the launch of the Mollart Microdrill vertical gundrilling machine.
Mollart Machine Tools has redefined the concept and capability of deep hole drilling with the launch of the Mollart Microdrill vertical gundrilling machine The machine breaks new ground in its ability to produce high accuracy holes as fine as 0.74 mm in diameter, at up to 25,000 revs/min and up to 360 mm deep at a penetration rate of up to 6 m/min

New production method developed for pneumatic part
Mollart Engineering has completely re-engineered the manufacture of a complex pneumatic hammer barrel component following investment in the UK's first Mazak Integrex 300Y mill-turn centre
Being vertical and with up to four spindles, means the machine is compact taking just 1,110 mm by 1,220 mm of floorspace - a fraction of the conventional horizontal spindle gundrill and is targeted directly at medical, electronic and fuel injection type industries.
With the Microdrill design, the machine is capable of producing holes up to 8 mm diameter, pitch circle hole drilling and off-centre holes.
It also introduces the advantages of CNC technology with speed monitoring, coolant pressure monitoring and a power monitoring system that is even able to detect a dull drill point on the smallest of deep hole tools.

Acu-Rite (GB) has announced an extension to its trade-in offer for used DROs until the end of June, so successful has the promotion been.
The machine is constructed with a fixed worktable set at a convenient loading height and separates the lower component area from the drill spindles, coolant and swarf.
The spindles are configured to drill upwards into the worktable mounted on a carriage via linear ways and powered by a ballscrew drive system.
An independent hydraulically driven vertical tailstock is set above the worktable.
A key area of design is the pitching of the spindles which is wide enough to accept fixturing on the table to accommodate angle and compound angle hole drilling - an important application in the target user sectors.
In addition, automatic component handling, utilising up to eight component grippers, working from each side of the machine can be supplied to feed and unload the workholding fixtures.
If pitch circle drilling is required, the addition of Y and X-axes accommodate workpiece positioning over the gundrill to allow sequential holes to be processed.
In this application, pneumatic bush operation ensures a positive coolant seal against the component to be drilled.
The spindle drive is provided by fully sealed motors of 2.2 kW giving up to 25,000 revs/min via belt and pulley.
Higher speeds can be attained through counter-rotation drive to the workhead.
Ceramic hybrid bearings are fitted to the spindles and special rotary inducers supply coolant through the tool.
A cooling jacket is used to ensure even motor temperature and provide a constant flushing action to remove swarf from the motor headstock into the chip tray.
An integrated coolant system is built into the rear of the machine with a 500 litre capacity tank and single pump with individual line pressure monitoring to each spindle.
Coolant pressure is variable between 20 and 150 bar with flow rate setting between 25 and 42 litres/min.
A significant development in the Microdrill PLC control software is the capability to display all process data in spreadsheet format which allows the complete cycle to be analysed and optimised.
In addition, fully integrated tool monitoring software is incorporated.
