Direct drive motors need no speed reducers

A Micromech product story

Powerful direct drive torque motors have a very high torque to size ratio, and so eliminate the need for gear reducers and are designed to be an integral part of a machine.

The new ST range of powerful direct drive torque motors have a very high torque to size ratio, eliminates the need for gear reducers and are designed to be an integral part of a machine.

Now available from Micromech the ST torque motors are a packaged low inertia motor capable of acceleration rates up to 20,000 rads/s2 available in 145mm and 190mm frame sizes.

They can deliver continuous torque ranges from 15Nm to 115Nm that is achievable in standard windings optimised for 500, 1000 and 1500 rev/min, and exceptionally smooth rotation is achievable at low speeds.

They offer outstanding performance with a continuous torque to weight ratio up to 3Nm/kg and a peak torque-to-weight ratio up to 7Nm/kg.

The other key features of the ST range are options of 60mm or 75mm diameter solid shaft and also hollow versions, and optional resolver or sincos encoder feedback.

There is also the STK motor rage which are frameless kit motors ideal for designing as an integral of the machine and are capable of outstanding rated continuous torques of 15Nm up to 2708Nm with natural convection and can reach 6000Nm using fluid cooling.

The peak torque is three times higher than the rated torque where up to 9258Nm is available even up to the rated speed.

The large-diameter hollow shaft provides an internal clearance between 56mm and 630mm with six external diameters from 145mm to 800mm.

For applications wanting no backlash, needing low speed of rotation and high torque, need to be compact and also need dynamic performance the ST direct drive system is ideal.

The kit model is designed to be integrated within machine tools such as rotary tables and grinding heads where they frequently require a large-diameter hollow shaft as well as high accuracy and speed regulation.

The packaged drive by eliminating a gearbox are most suitable for solutions in printing machines, bending machines or machine tools which require extremely smooth rotation, especially at very low speed, and very high accuracy.

Frequently there is also a requirement for a hollow shaft.
