Are your acoustic measurements fit for
purpose?
The Institute of Acoustics are hosting one-day meeting entitled 'Are your acoustic measurements fit for purpose?' on the 11th of July at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex.
When making any acoustical measurements one of the main questions often faced by practitioners is 'How good a measurement should I make to ensure it is fit for purpose?' The Institute of Acoustics is holding a one day meeting on 11 July 2007, organised by the Measurement and Instrumentation Group of the IOA, to discuss this topic This meeting, to be held at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington will be of interest to anyone who makes acoustical measurements or interprets them, such as acoustical consultants, environmental health practitioners, planners, health and safety officers, the legal profession and instrument manufacturers

Acoustics Award to go public
With noise increasingly on the public agenda and to encourage activity to create a greater awareness of acoustics, the Institute of Acoustics has announced an Award for Promoting Acoustics.
To answer this key question there are many items to consider - what is the appropriate instrumentation and accuracy, what method should be employed, and what will be the eventual use of the instrumentation or results of the measurements? This meeting has a varied programme providing illustrations and practical guidance on this key question for different applications.
It includes papers on sound level meter accuracy, calibration strategies (including a case study relating to the telecommunications industry), noise dosimetry, industrial application of machinery noise standards, unattended measurements and post measurement analysis of results of environmental noise surveys.
The meeting will also provide an opportunity to observe some practical demonstrations in NPL's suite of specialist measurement facilities, and a short workshop on the art of coupling an acoustic calibrator to a sound level meter.
