Rolling mill revamp to raise output rate
Looking to raise capacity an use a more modern mill design, an Australian mill has awarded a contact for a complete mill revamp, including replacing rolling stands of 1923 vintage.
Seeking greater capacity and a more modern mill design, Smorgon Steel, now part of OneSteel in Melbourne, Australia, has contracted with Morgan Construction Company, USA, to upgrade its bar mill and rod mill at their North Laverton facility The equipment for the bar mill will, according to Neil Gow, Rolling Mill Sales manager for Morgan: "Modernize and improve the whole slitting process." It will also enable three-strand and two-strand slitting

Morgan Construction, through its UK subsidiary, Morgan-Europe, Sheffield, has won a contract to upgrade Fundia Nedstaal's mill in Alblasserdam, The Netherlands.
Mill upgrade will allow rolling larger rod sizes
Morgan Construction Company has received an order to upgrade Connecticut Steel Corporation's (CSC) single-strand mill to produce largedr rod sizes.
Included in the contract are two stands to replace stands originally manufactured by Morgan in 1923 for a previous owner.
The contact also includes gear boxes, spindles, rest bars, an air/oil lubrication system, roll change equipment and spares.
The mill rolls a wide range of products including thread bar, rounds, rebar, flats and angles.
Delivery will be in late June 2008.
In a separate contract, a new pinch roll and laying head for the rod mill will improve productivity.
"There will be better pattern and tail end control," Gow explained.
The mill, which produces rod and rebar, will also see rolling speeds increase to 100m/s with the new equipment.
Delivery on this contract is expected on site in October 2008.
