PCD gun boring tools have more cutting edges to enable higher feed rates, which then allow machining times and therefore cycle times to be reduced.

The PCD gun boring tools from the Mapal WWS multifaceted product portfolio are unique in design The remarkable properties and options offered by PCD are utilised to the full and converted into multi-bladed tools

Initially an increase in the number of cutting edges results directly in higher feed rates which then allows machining times and therefore cycle times to be reduced.

In addition, because of the multiple blades, other positive effects can also be made on the machining result and the cutting process in general.

Better bore geometries are achieved with more blades, compared for example to twin-bladed gun boring tools.

The more blades machine the same diameter, the better the roundness and concentricity.

The PCD tool is better supported in the bore by a number of blades or radial lands in the bore and the amount of guiding is increased so that the process also clearly runs more quietly and vibration free.

In addition the tool life is increased by the distribution of the all the cutting tasks between a number of blades.

These claims can be impressively substantiated: a new type of PCD stepped gun boring tool, with which the largest diameter of 145mm is designed with eight blades, replaces a total of four tools for roughing and finish machining at the customer's works as a combination tool.

Various diameters on a gear component can be machined simultaneously in one go, reliably achieving cutting depths of up to about 2mm and concentricity of 2-3 micron.

Furthermore the Mapal WWS PCD stepped gun boring tool reduces the cycle time by 70%.

The resulting increase in production capacity means that investments of several million Euro in additional machines did not have to be made.

The changeover to the PCD stepped gun boring tool alone has already brought the customer significant savings in component costs.

Mapal WWS have been able to lower these figures by a further 50% by ongoing improvements.

To take full advantage of the rationalisation potential in the cutting processes in main and ancillary times, combination tools are a highly economic solution.

This also applies for PCD gun boring tools - all the more so if the individual machining steps are carried out with multiple blades.

Several individual tools are replaced and operations which previously ran in sequences now run parallel at maximum feed rates.

This means the total machining time per component, and as a result the production costs, are heavily reduced.

The production capacity from existing production systems can also be increased and new investments spared while production quantities rise.

For machining components in aluminium and other non-ferrous metals, PCD tools hold a firm place in modern cutting processes and have become established as high performance tools.

Because of the significantly higher cutting speeds compared to carbide tools and at the same time much longer tool life, they are extremely economic despite higher purchase costs.

With its Silver Jubilee in 2005 Mapal WWS has been working with these tools for 25 years and is the largest manufacturer in the world with well-founded knowledge and experience in production and application.

For EMO 2005 MAPAL has chosen Action against Waste as the slogan for its banners.

PCD gun boring tools from Mapal WWS are a good example of this as main and ancillary times are clearly reduced by its multi-bladed PCD combination tools.
