11-axis gantry welding robot on
permanent display
What is believed to be the only permanent demonstration of gantry-mounted, inverted-robot arc welding in the UK features a system with an 11-axis CNC and many different configurations.
What is believed to be the only permanent demonstration of gantry-mounted, inverted-robot arc welding has been set up at the new Banbury headquarters of Motoman Robotics (UK) The 11-axis CNC system was finished in time to show visitors attending the company's recent open house exhibition during early April (2002)

Ford uses Motoman robots for sealant application
As an alternative to fitting conventional gaskets to seal the mating faces of vehicle engines, Ford finds that a quicker and more economical method is to lay down a bead of sealant by robot.
Articulated-arm robots offer larger envelope
The SK Series of articulated-arm robots from Motoman has been replaced by a new range, designated UP Series.
The Swedish-based company is a major supplier of such systems to world markets and specialises in offering standard configurations.
The range comprises seven models in each of three variants: with a single (X) axis of 3 to 24 metres; with two axes from 6 to 24 metres in X and 1800mm in Y, which is horizontal and perpendicular to the gantry; and with three axes having the same X and Y travels and the addition of a 1200mm vertical Z axis movement of the robot.
Rapid traverse in X and Y is 32m/min and half that speed in Z, with a repetitive positioning accuracy of +/-0.5 mm.
All configurations have either one or two inverted Motoman UP6 robots, the company's latest 6-axis model having direct drive on all axes and electrical and pneumatic services routed internally from the base to the upper arm, eliminating trailing hoses and cables.
Where two robots are used in tandem, both are programmed from the same XRC control pendant to allow fully synchronous motion without any cross-talk between separate control systems.
The result is more accurate welding and shorter cycle times.
Gantry welding systems are ideal for large, bulky components and fabrications; a particular Motoman specialism is container manufacture.
Various conveyor systems can be integrated for easy transportation of workpieces in and out of the cells.
Automated loading and unloading of coded fixture pallets is achieved using lifting tables and pneumatic clamps.
Comarc seam finding and tracking systems are invariably fitted including software for multi-layer welding.
