Automated production welding is available for a modest capital outlay and on short lead time in the form of off-the-shelf, single- and twin-station arc welding systems.

Automated production welding is available for a modest capital outlay and on short lead time from Motoman Robotics (UK), which has launched its new 'Arcsystem' range of off-the-shelf, single- and twin-station arc welding systems that may incorporate one or more articulated-arm robots They are characterised by compact footprints, from 3.2m x 5.1m for a single-robot Arcsystem 1000 with pneumatic turntable to 5.7m x 6.5m for a twin-robot Arcsystem 6500 with 1200mm swing workpiece positioner

Noteworthy is that the patented single motor that drives both station index and workpiece manipulation is a simpler and more reliable solution than if three separate drives are used.

Such configurations would typically take 10 days to build on-site, whereas these modular cells are easy to transport on a lorry and can be delivered and erected in two or three days.

As installed, the systems have all-round sheet metal guarding with a roof, interior lighting and pneumatic lift doors.

The entire cell rests on a base and can be relocated easily within a factory using a large lift truck.

Each system is based on Motoman's UP6 or UP20 robot, the suffix representing the maximum payload.

They feature a flexible conduit that routes all services from the base to the upper arm, eliminating trailing hoses and cables.

Direct drive on all axes assure speed, accuracy and reliability, positioning accuracy being +/-0.08mm.

As part of the package, the supplier provides workholding equipment from relatively simple fixtures with manual clamps to complicated pneumatic fixtures and fieldbus signal transfer.

A wide range of welding equipment and accessories is available including a choice of power sources, air/gas-cooled or water-cooled torches, breakaway torch mounts, torch cleaning units, wire feeders, and seam tracking.

Control is by the patented Motoman XRC, capable of controlling up to 27 axes, sufficient for three robots and all peripheral equipment.

For twin- and triple-robot systems there is no cross-talk between individual controllers, minimising cycle times, promoting weld accuracy and eliminating the risk of collision.
