Ford uses Motoman robots for sealant application
As an alternative to fitting conventional gaskets to seal the mating faces of vehicle engines, Ford finds that a quicker and more economical method is to lay down a bead of sealant by robot.
A patented single motor drives station indexing and workpiece manipulation, giving a simpler and more reliable solution than if three separate drives were used, said Motoman.
The company adds that such configurations would typically take 10 days to build on-site, whereas these modular cells are easy to transport on a lorry and can be delivered and erected in two or three days.
Each system is based on Motoman's UP6 or UP20 robot and feature a flexible conduit that routes all services from the base to the upper arm, eliminating trailing hoses and cables.
Direct drive on all axes assure speed, accuracy and reliability; positioning accuracy being +/-0.08mm.
