3M launches air tool range with synergy in mind

A 3M product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Aug 21, 2008

3M has launched an air tool range, designed with synergy between the user, the tool and the consumable in mind.

Designed with a back-to-basics approach, the range includes a disc sander, a die grinder and a cut-off wheel tool.

All are equipped with high-output air motors and comprise 11 variants.

3M said the products were created to optimise tool and abrasive performance and incorporate measures to increase and enhance operator usability and comfort.

These include 360 deg directional exhausts and 3M's Greptile material - a surface covering manufactured using a micro-replication process that provides a more effective grip.

The disc sander is available in three variants: two 2in models with different airflow and power ratings (0.33HP and 0.5HP) and a 3in version offering 1HP.

The unit's air motor and smaller head means jobs can be completed faster and users can work closer to the surface being abraded.

The disc sander's Quick-Attach system allows it to utilise 3M's range of Roloc metal finishing consumables, enabling it to be fine-tuned for an array of applications including de-burring, grinding, blending, finishing and cleaning.

3M said the disc sander's 97 deg head angle increases the ergonomics of the tool.

The pneumatic die grinders have been designed to handle refining, finishing, cleaning and de-burring needs on the most complex of production parts.

Four models are available with different rev/min ratings (8, 12, 18 and 20,000).

All feature a 1HP motor, which allows users to complete jobs more quickly and the unit's ergonomic design gives greater control during operation.

A wide range of consumables from 3M's range, including Scotch-Brite brushes and wheels, bristle discs and flap wheels, means that the die grinders are suitable for any number of applications on a variety of metals.

3M's 1HP cut-off wheel tools share the same ergonomic features as the others, but also incorporate additional built-in safety features including a safety lever throttle and a 360 deg rotatable safety guard.

The range comprises four models: 3 and 4in wheel in-line units and 4.5 and 5in wheel right-angle units.

Users have a choice of 3M's Cubitron Abrasive grain wheels (available in 3 and 4in) or Inox aluminium oxide wheels (available in 4.5 and 5in).
