CMM wins quality race for Ilmor

No refocus needed to check stepped parts

Automated machines test fine fibres
Producer of miniature, automated fibre-strength testing machines uses a scanning laser micrometer to help rapidly evaluate tensile properties of fibres down to 5 micron.
QV PAK version 4.3 software was supplied with the CMM, allowing the machine to be programmed for automatic inspection of all parts manufactured.
As part of the CAD CAM process, a design is created on the computer screen, with data being downloaded to the machining centre for the part to be produced.
Similar data can also be passed to the CMM thereby programming the measuring machine ready to inspect the actual part when produced.
Ilmor does a great deal of very high precision CNC machining.
With the CMM it is an easy matter to enter or change a programme, and once in the machine it can be called up at any time to inspect a particular part.
Reverse engineering is also possible using the QV pro machine.
These are certain parts that the designer wants to draw in more detail, so they are measured with the CMM and the data is created which is downloaded to the computer.
From here, the designer can use the information to update drawings.
A critical factor for many component parts of a highly stressed racing engine is that of roundness and concentricity.
The Roundtest RA116 with a measuring range of +/-1000mm, a rotating accuracy of (0.07+6H/10000)mm and a workpiece diameter capacity up to 440mm, provides the solution to these measurement requirements and is also capable of squareness and parallelism inspection.
Ilmor produces special screw threads to its own specification and on some of them they company is trying to maintain a pitch to probably three microns.
