MTA praised the UK Government for providing a stable economic environment for business to operate in and acknowledged that its attitude towards manufacturing had improved.

Opening the speeches at The Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA) Annual Dinner in London last night, MTA President Paul Maynard outlined the MTA's views on the Government and the current state of manufacturing in the UK Maynard praised the Government for providing a stable economic environment for business to operate in and acknowledged that the Government's attitude towards manufacturing has improved

He did however raise concerns about the ongoing burdens of regulation and the adverse implications of price-rises in raw materials and energy costs over the next few years.

Another important point raised during the speech outlined concerns employers have about the windfall the government is gaining from IPT tax on escalating Employers' Liability insurance.

CBI Director General, Digby Jones followed Paul, and developed some of Paul's themes to remind guests that British manufacturing has a great deal to offer in a global context.

His speech concentrated on British achievements, such as the UK's status as a world leader in R and D and innovation, the most recent example of which is involvement in the Airbus project.

Digby also reminded the audience that in order to sustain this position companies must be prepared to invest in their staff.

He told the audience that it is imperative that employers up skill their workforce, to ensure that high value manufacturing remains in the UK in the long-term.
